The European Institute of Oncology (IEO) is seeking a bioinformatician in the Laboratory of Endocytosis, Signalling and Cancer, directed by Prof. Pier Paolo Di Fiore, with a 12-month, potentially renewable, contract. The successful candidate will support activities related to the project entitled “An integrated nanophotonics-multiomics platform for the stratification of breast cancer patients for diagnostic purposes” (code: PNRR-MCNT2-2023-12378490 - codice CUP: J43C24000470006), Principal Investigator – Prof. Pier Paolo Di Fiore, funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) of the Italian Ministry of Health.
The successful candidate will be involved in cutting-edge cancer research that integrates high-throughput and high-resolution approaches to unravel the mechanisms of carcinogenesis and metastasis. The group is strongly interested in both basic and applied cancer research.
The major areas of interest are:
- Stem cells in cancer and metastasis;
- Regulation of cell logistics in cancer and metastasis;
- Metabolic alterations in cancer and metastasis.
The successful candidate will work on research projects with a strong focus on data analysis and interpretation from experimental datasets, such as genomic, proteomic, and transcriptomic datasets, as well as clinical datasets. The successful candidates will also engage in data mining from cancer databases and public repositories of scientific datasets to contribute to impactful cancer research. The successful candidate will be expected to interact with the wet-lab extensively and proactively.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Analyze, integrate, and interpret large-scale multi-omics datasets (genomic, proteomic, transcriptomic) and clinical data.
- Perform data mining on cancer-related databases and publicly available datasets.
- Collaborate with team members to design and execute computational workflows for cancer research.
- Contribute to manuscript preparation and scientific presentations.
- Present findings at international conferences and collaborate with external partners on high-profile projects.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related field;
- Strong background in bioinformatics, genomics, and large-scale data analysis;
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and/or R;
- Strong communication skills and proficiency in written and spoken English;
- Experience with cancer research and familiarity with cancer databases is desirable;
- Experience with HPC and pipeline manager tools (NextFlow, Snakemake) is a plus;
- Previous experience in working with clinical datasets is a plus;
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team is a plus.

SELECTION AND EVALUATION PROCEDURE
The identification of the fellow will take place through a comparative evaluation of the candidates based on qualifications and a possible oral interview.
The assessment will consist of an evaluation of the candidate's CV, aimed at ascertaining the required knowledge and skills necessary for the performance of the activities involved in the above-mentioned project.
The oral interview, if any, will be aimed at examining in-depth the candidate's educational and professional experiences, personal motivations and aptitudes, as well as assessing the candidate's availability for multidisciplinary activities and technical-scientific discussions. Failure to attend the interview, for any reason whatsoever, will be considered as renouncement of the selection.
