A post-graduate fellowship for biomedical research is available in the Unit of Gynecological Oncology Research, directed by Ugo Cavallaro, at the European Institute of Oncology, IFOM-IEO Campus, Milan, Italy. The lab offers unique experimental resources and leading expertise on ovarian cancer modeling and functional characterization of ovarian cancer stem cells (Battistini et al, Cell Death & Dis 2024; Nieddu et al, Cell Death & Dis 2023; Lupia et al, Int J Cancer 2022, Giordano et al, J Exp Clin Cancer 2021, Lupia et al, Stem Cell Reports 2018; Francavilla et al, Cell Reports 2017; Zecchini et al, EMBO Mol Med 2011). Further info on research activities of the group can be found at https://www.research.ieo.it/research-and-technology/principal-investigators/unit-of-gynecological-oncology-research/.

The fellow will investigate novel players and mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of ovarian cancer stem cells. The project will rely on a broad spectrum of experimental models (patient-derived primary cells, new-generation organotypic 3D cultures, mouse xenografts), with an outstanding clinical relevance, thanks to our close interaction with the Division of Gynecology in IEO Hospital. Molecular profiling with various omics technologies and a wide range of biochemical and cell biological assays will be applied to unravel the biological mechanisms that orchestrate the pro-malignant function of ovarian cancer stem cells.

Job requirements:

  • Sc. in biomedical areas (Biology, Biotechnology, Bioengineering, etc.).
  • Previous internship in a biomedical lab.
  • Solid background in cellular biology and robust hands-on experience with cell culture.
  • Strong motivation and research commitment.
  • Excellent organization skills combined with reliability and precision.
  • Team working attitude.
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Previous experience with mouse handling will be considered a plus.

A competitive salary will be offered depending on experience and qualifications.

The post-graduate student will be encouraged to apply at the selection of the European School of Molecular Medicine SEMM (www.semm.it) to join our Ph.D. program.

The positions is available from January 2025 and is initially for one year.

The European Institute of Oncology is a comprehensive Cancer Center, linking basic and translational research to clinical activities. The Department of Experimental Oncology hosts about 250 researchers working in 20 independent groups, and is endowed with state-of-the-art Technological Units. IEO is an equal opportunity employer committed to excellence through diversity.

How to apply:

Applicants should send their CV along with a brief motivation and the name and contact details of two references to Ugo Cavallaro at ugo.cavallaro@ieo.it.
